Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic and Watch 5 Pro Overview

The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is the predecessor to the Watch 5 model. It came out in 2021 and included several major updates compared to the previous Galaxy Watch 3. The Watch 4 and the Watch 4 Classic included 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The Galaxy Watch 3 had just 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. The Watch 4 Classic also featured a more powerful processor. Samsung used an Exynos W920 dual-core 1.18GHz chip.

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro LTE came out a year later and includes many of the same features. Samsung used the same processor, RAM, and storage. Yet, the newer watch includes a larger, brighter display and an updated operating system. Here is a closer look at the differences between the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic and the Watch 5 Pro LTE.

Case Finish

The case is one of the highlights of the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. It features stainless steel material while the standard Watch 4 has an aluminum case.

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro includes a stylish titanium body instead of stainless steel. The newer watch has a slightly more durable case and is less likely to suffer from permanent scratch marks.

Both options are compatible with a wide range of aftermarket watch bands and cases. Both versions are also more durable compared to the standard models.

The standard Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 5 feature aluminum frames instead of stainless steel or titanium.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro LTE includes a sharper display compared to the Watch 4 Classic. It is made with an AMOLED screen, which offers greater clarity, deeper blacks, and brighter colors compared to the older screens.

The size and resolution of the screens are nearly identical. The large-size (46mm) Watch 4 Classic and the Watch 5 Pro both include a 1.4-inch (34.6mm) display with a resolution of 450 x 450 pixels.

The Watch 5 Pro uses AMOLED technology and features a different glass cover. It includes a sapphire crystal face instead of Gorilla Glass DX+. The newer material is more durable and scratch resistant.

The older display had a tensile strength of about 15 gigapascals (GPa). The new sapphire crystal screens on the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro have a tensile strength of 29 GPa.

Size 45mm vs. 46mm

The Watch 4 Classic is available in 42mm and 46mm sizes while the Watch 5 Pro comes in a 45mm size. The 46mm Watch 4 Classic and the 45mm Watch 5 Pro are comparable in size. Yet, the Watch 5 Pro weighs less. The 46mm Watch 4 Classic weighs about 52 grams. The Watch 5 Pro weighs 46.5 grams, which is the same weight as the 42mm Watch 4 Classic. Stay-Active Apps

The Samsung Galaxy watches use the Wear OS platform, which is based on the Android operating system. The newer watch was designed for Wear OS 3.5, which includes access to a QWERTY keyboard and other typing updates.

Samsung also recently released One UI Watch 4.5, which is available for both the Watch 4 and the Watch 5. The updated user interface includes improvements for the notification area.

No matter which version of the watch you buy, you gain access to the same interface and selection of stay-active apps. You can track your fitness activities, monitor your sleep patterns, and check your heart rate.

Navigating the apps is a little different on each watch. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic includes a rotating bezel. The bezel acts as a dial for scrolling, setting the time, and performing other functions.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro replaces the rotating bezel with the capacitive bezel found on older models. The capacitive bezel allows you to navigate menus with a touch of your finger. Some people prefer the rotating bezel while others enjoy the simplicity of the capacitive bezel.

LTE Feature and E-SIM

Samsung offers LTE versions of the Watch 4 Classic and the Watch 5 Pro. Both options use an eSIM card. An eSIM is an electronic version of the physical SIM cards used in mobile phones to connect to cellphone carriers.

LTE and eSIM technologies allow your Samsung Galaxy Watch to connect to supported phone services. You can receive notifications, check emails, and more without needing to pair the watch to a phone via Bluetooth.

You can even answer calls without being near your phone, making it a convenient option for those that are frequently on the go.

The newer watch was designed for Wear OS 3.5, which includes access to a QWERTY keyboard and other typing updates.

Battery

The battery life is one of the main updates introduced with the Galaxy Watch 5 model. The Pro version includes the biggest battery in a Galaxy Watch, giving you about 80 hours of regular use.

The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic offers around 40 hours with regular use. The battery in the 46mm Watch 4 Classic has a 361mAh capacity while the Watch 5 Pro battery has a 590mAh capacity.

The Watch 4 Classic and the Watch 5 Pro both support wireless power consortium (WPC) charging. WPC charging allows you to wirelessly charge your wearable device.

While both watches support WPC charging, the Watch 5 Pro battery provides faster charging. You can recharge your battery quickly and go longer between charges.

Overall Improvement of Watch 5 Pro LTE to Its Predecessor

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro LTE includes a sharper display, tougher screen, and more durable case compared to the Watch 4 Classic.

It also includes the largest battery available in a Samsung smartwatch. The larger battery offers up to 80 hours of use, which is about double the battery life expected from the Watch 4 Classic. It also charges faster.

In the end, if you want the best display and extended battery life, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro LTE is the top choice.
